Dog Days of Summer: 10 things to do this summer in Austin, according to dogs

Summer is in full swing, y’all! One of my favorite things about living in Austin is our dog-friendly community. With the help of local shelters like Austin Pets Alive, Austin is the largest no-kill city in the country and there are tons of local spots that welcome our favorite furry friends. Here are some suggestions from local tastemaker pups on how to have your best summer ever!

1. Yoga at Mount Bonnell
Well-dressed sisters Dazee and Dazzle are soaking up good vibes and taking in iconic ATX scenery. Their favorite pose? You guessed it—downward dog.

2. Grab a frozen banana from Bananarchy
Good boy and part-time banana Rio cannot get enough of these! He’s not allowed to have chocolate, but I recommend the Afternoon Delight halfsie. Rio is adoptable from Austin Pets Alive.

3. Hit up your favorite happy hour spot
Kiky the Husky knows the only thing better than a summer cocktail is one that’s served in a pineapple! Bonus points for the little pink umbrella.

4. Jump in a swimming hole
Sweet Sarah loves to swim. She has been checking all the great local swimming holes off her bucket list. Sarah is adoptable from Austin Pets Alive.

5. Check out a free show at Blues on the Green
It’s just not summer in Austin without Blues on the Green. Charlie goes to every single BOTG. She says it’s for the local music, but we suspect it has more to do with her love of rolling around on the grass. (Celebrity alert: Charlie was one of Zilker Bark’s top 10 puppies of 2018! She’s also part of our Zilker Media family.)

6. Relax in the pool
No, that’s not a three-legged land seal. It’s Martin! Besides having the cutest underbite in the world, Martin has got the lounging thing down pat. Martin is adoptable from Austin Pets Alive.

7. Listen to your favorite summer jams
Neeko (aka Freeky Neeko) has been playing You Need to Calm Down on repeat and working on his Taylor Swift cosplay. We must say, it’s getting pretty good!

8. Hit the trails on the Greenbelt!
Another member of the Zilker Media family, Xander loves a good morning hike before it gets too hot. Just in case, he always makes sure to jump right in the water to cool off. You can’t be too careful in this Texas heat.

9. Visit the botanical gardens at Zilker Park
Check out some of the beautiful blooms at our namesake, Zilker Park. Levi Strauss didn’t even mean to coordinate his outfit with the flowers but it was such a happy accident that he had to get a pic! Levi Strauss is adoptable from Austin Pets Alive.

10. Stay in and watch Netflix
Let’s be honest—it’s hot and we’re all about staying in the AC. Phife Dog was so psyched that free Slurpee day came right after his Stranger Things binge-watch because he was having a serious craving. Cherry is his favorite flavor—and he can definitely taste the difference.
